Human translation for legal and commercially sensitive material
Legal translation for UK law firms, businesses and professional organisations
TP Translations provides professional human translation of legal and business documents. We can assist with individual documents and larger multilingual projects, subject to reviewing the language combination, subject matter, intended use, format and timescale.

A document required for internal review may need a different service from one intended for court proceedings, a regulator, a government department or an overseas authority. We will confirm whether we can provide the requested service after reviewing the requirements.

Human translation with context
Legal translation is not simply a word-for-word substitution exercise. Defined terms, context, tone, formatting and differences between legal systems can all affect how a document should be translated.
Our service uses human translators selected according to the language combination and project requirements. Where available, please provide:
- defined terms and related agreements;
- earlier translations that must remain consistent;
- client or organisation terminology;
- relevant background to the matter;
- the jurisdiction and intended audience;
- formatting or court requirements; and
- the receiving body’s instructions.
Important: TP Translations provides a linguistic service and does not provide legal advice. The lawyers or professional advisers responsible for the matter must decide how the translated document should be interpreted, relied upon or used.
Translation of recorded legal material
Where evidence or information is contained in an audio or video recording, we can discuss a combined transcription and translation service. Available outputs may include:
- a transcript in the original language;
- an English translation;
- both the original-language transcript and an English translation;
- an English-only translated transcript;
- named, numbered or role-based speaker labels;
- timestamps;
- strict or intelligent verbatim treatment; and
- client-specific formatting.
The required output must be agreed before work begins because the stages, timescale and price can differ substantially. Send a representative recording where possible so that the language, sound quality and number of speakers can be assessed.
Certified and officially accepted translations
The meaning of “certified translation” and the evidence required can vary between courts, regulators, government departments, universities, overseas authorities and other receiving organisations.
Before ordering, ask the receiving body exactly what it requires. This might include a particular translator declaration, membership, signature, stamp, notarisation, legalisation, original hard copy or prescribed format. Send the written requirements to us so that we can confirm whether an appropriate service is available.
We cannot guarantee that a translation will be accepted by a particular organisation unless its requirements have been supplied and we have confirmed in writing that we can meet them.
Confidentiality and information security
Legal documents may contain personal data, commercially sensitive information, evidence or material that the instructing organisation considers privileged or confidential.
TP Translations operates within the TP Transcription Limited group. Published group security arrangements include UKAS-accredited ISO 27001:2022 information-security management together with Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus. Secure file-transfer facilities are available.
We can also discuss:
- confidentiality requirements;
- Data Processing Agreements;
- retention and deletion periods;
- access restrictions;
- password-protected delivery;
- supplier-security questionnaires; and
- project-specific transfer or delivery arrangements.
The instructing organisation remains responsible for deciding what it is permitted to disclose, whether privilege or another restriction applies, and what contractual or technical safeguards are required. Contact us before uploading files if the project is subject to a particular regulatory, contractual or geographic restriction.

Information required for a quotation

- the required target language;
- the complete document or a representative sample;
- the approximate word count or recording length;
- the subject matter and document type;
- the intended use and receiving organisation;
- the relevant jurisdiction, where this affects the terminology;
- the required return date;
- the preferred file format;
- relevant terminology, definitions or reference documents;
- whether additional proofreading or review is required; and

Frequently asked questions
Which languages do you cover?
We work across a wide range of languages and language combinations. Availability depends on the language pair, subject matter, document type, volume and required timescale. Send the material for confirmation.
Can you translate confidential or privileged documents?
We can discuss confidential material and appropriate transfer, access and contractual arrangements. The instructing organisation must decide whether it is permitted to disclose the material and whether privilege, professional duties or other restrictions require additional safeguards.
Can you provide a certified translation?
This depends on what the receiving organisation means by “certified” and what evidence it requires. Obtain its written requirements and send them to us. We will then confirm whether we can provide the appropriate service.
Will the translation be accepted by a court or authority?
Acceptance requirements differ between organisations and jurisdictions. We cannot guarantee acceptance without reviewing the receiving body’s requirements and confirming that the requested format and certification can be provided.
Can you translate an audio or video recording?
Yes, subject to the language and project requirements. We will clarify whether you need an original-language transcript, an English translation, both versions or an English-only translated transcript.
Can you reproduce the original document formatting?
We can usually follow the structure of the source document. Complex tables, forms, handwriting, poor-quality scans and specialist desktop-publishing formats may require additional work, which will be considered when quoting.
Do you provide legal advice?
No. We translate the source material according to the agreed instructions. The relevant lawyers or professional advisers remain responsible for legal interpretation, advice and use of the translated document.
How much does legal translation cost?
The price depends on the language pair, word count, complexity, formatting, timescale and any proofreading or formal certification requirement. Send the documents and instructions for a tailored quotation.
